Dong-Qing
tribe’s summoning of fish
At
six o’clock in the morning, the red sun rose from the sea horizon, and wiped
the rainy clouds away.
After
the start of ceremony, the priest’s five-oar rowboat which sits ten was
pushed into the sea. In order to hold the ceremony of summoning flying fish on
the sea, the boat sailed out the harbor by riding the sunlight.
After
the priest finished the ceremony on the boat, shouting boat owners started walking
into the sea. At the same time, they raised their oblations (chicken or pig) in
hand, and called the flying fish to come to their sea territory.
Every
tribe in Lanyu would hold the flying fish ceremony on their own, but the
ceremonies in Yu-Ren, Dong-Qing, and Lang-Dao differ in the ways to carry out
the ceremony and the extent of their participation.
Lang-Doa
has to be the one that preserves the traditional ceremony.
